Special Guests in 3rd Grade:
One of the best things about learning new information is to have first hand
experiences.
Third graders have had many speakers from our community share their life experiences
as Native Americans. Jackson's grandmother, Debby Haskins, a true Abenaki, told
us a story about Gluscabe and had a wonderful display of artifacts including
a drum, flute, beaded bag, healing bags, and a smudging bowl with sage. Todd
Hebert, an Abenaki who owns The Indian Museum at The Sugarhouse in East Montpelier,
answered lots of our questions and showed us his beautiful carved walking stick.
Logan's dad, Damien Middelton, a Calais 5/6 grade teacher, showed us a power
point presentation on the smart board of his trip to the Arctic Circle where
he lived
with the Inuit. He brought in mittens and slippers made of seal skin. We all
agreed with him when he said the slippers were stinky and we reminded him to
get them back in the freezer! Logan's grandmother, Jane Middelton- Moz, an Ojibway,
taught us some songs and had many experiences to share with us. We are so grateful
to have had contact with these people who have enriched our understanding of
native history and shown us how their heritage continues to influence their
lives today.
We have had a lot of fun with the Native American unit and will soon be putting
all our products of writing and art together into book form. - 3rd Grade teacher,
Deb Grout

Thanks so much to all of you who attended our evening potluck with Robert
Dostis, Dorigan Keeney and Georgia Myer to see Robert's film on childhood
hunger in Vermont and discuss how we all can help: politically, by keeping
pressure on our representatives to vote for food stamps, WIC and other important
food programs that keep being cut; physically with our own hands, by
helping at the Calais-Woodbury Food Shelf; and monetarily by making donations
of food or funds. I hope you found the evening as informative as I did. We
clearly have great people working to end childhood hunger, and I am hopeful
we can make a difference.
I know some of you expressed an interest in presenting these topics as part
of the Nutrition Committee at the Calais Elementary School and at your local
churches. If you need more information, materials or films, or want to make
a contribution of time, donations, or both, please contact the following people:

Amphibian Rescue!
During the first warm, rainy nights of spring, over half a dozen different species of frogs and salamanders make a mass migration from their wintering sites in upland habitats to vernal pools and other suitable breeding grounds. Due to habitat fragmentation by roads, a vast number of frogs and salamanders are inadvertently killed each year trying to cross through the traffic. Road mortality is painfully high, destroying entire populations or limiting their success rate. Add to this increased development and higher road usage, and the scales are tipped squarely against these animals. The objectives of this program are to educate the public about this little-known mass migration, and to recruit volunteers to assist our four-legged friends in their dangerous journey.
Training to take place on April 10, 6:30 PM at the Maple Corner Community Center.
Learn how to save these precious creatures during their annual spring migration.

The Sixth Annual Adamant Blackfly Festival Parade
"Downtown" Adamant
Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Please mark your calendars and start mixing up the paper mache: the date for the sixth annual Adamant Blackfly Festival has been set for Saturday, May 17th.
As always, the highlight of the festival is the Blackfly Parade. The parade features eclectic costumes and impromptu music, including what promises to be an impressive demonstration of virtuoso kazoo playing and creative percussionist riffs on trash can lids.
People of all ages are welcome to join the parade, which is especially popular with children and adults with an off-beat sense of humor. Past parades have variously been described as "campy", "Felliniesque", and "the Macy’s Day Parade of the Insect World."
Please help us in making this year’s parade the social (if not the artistic) event of the season by joining us in the parade on Saturday, May 17.
For more information about the Adamant Blackfly Festival Parade, please contact Cindy Cook (802-223-6060, ccook@adamantaccord.com) or
Pitz Quattrone (802-229-4952 pitzdidg@sover.net).
