Special Guests in 3rd Grade:

One of the best things about learning new information is to have first hand experiences.
Third graders have had many speakers from our community share their life experiences as Native Americans. Jackson's grandmother, Debby Haskins, a true Abenaki, told us a story about Gluscabe and had a wonderful display of artifacts including a drum, flute, beaded bag, healing bags, and a smudging bowl with sage. Todd Hebert, an Abenaki who owns The Indian Museum at The Sugarhouse in East Montpelier, answered lots of our questions and showed us his beautiful carved walking stick. Logan's dad, Damien Middelton, a Calais 5/6 grade teacher, showed us a power point presentation on the smart board of his trip to the Arctic Circle where he lived
with the Inuit. He brought in mittens and slippers made of seal skin. We all agreed with him when he said the slippers were stinky and we reminded him to get them back in the freezer! Logan's grandmother, Jane Middelton- Moz, an Ojibway, taught us some songs and had many experiences to share with us. We are so grateful to have had contact with these people who have enriched our understanding of native history and shown us how their heritage continues to influence their lives today.
We have had a lot of fun with the Native American unit and will soon be putting all our products of writing and art together into book form. - 3rd Grade teacher, Deb Grout

Subject: Looking for a new place to live

for e-newsletter.
many of you know Michael Arnowitt, a gifted pianist in Montpelier . His email is foodsong@sover.net.
Thanks -- Marialisa

Friends,

The lease for the place I am renting in Montpelier will be expiring at the
end of April and so I have been looking around for options for a new place
to live.

My main reason for being interested in moving is that I would like to lower
my rent, which is really way too high in comparison to my income. (This
year doesn't look like it will be a good year income-wise.)

The main thing I need in an apartment, house, or cabin would be an ability
to practice my piano late into the evening - before a concert I practice
some nights until midnight or 12:30 am. So the piano needs to be in a room
where it's basically inaudible to a housemate or adjoining apartment, or so
quiet that it would not prevent someone from falling asleep.

I would be willing to either live by myself, with housemates, or in some
sort of communal housing set-up.

It would be best if the potential place were in Montpelier, but as housing
in Montpelier is expensive, to try to lower my rent I would consider living
out of town. If I lived outside of Montpelier, it would be preferable if I
could keep my 229 telephone number, so I guess that would be towns such as
Middlesex, Worcester, Moretown, Calais, East Montpelier, Adamant... If
living outside of Montpelier reduced my rent sufficiently, I could possibly
hire someone to drive me around for shopping, post office, etc.

In a house-share situation, I would consider paying more than my portion of
the expenses in exchange for some transportation or reading help for things
I have trouble with due to my eye disease.

If you or someone you know might be interested in my current place in
Montpelier, let me know. I am renting a small house with 4 rooms on the
first floor and 2 rooms on the second floor. It is a little large for 1
person but would be a little small for two people unless they were a couple.

Please call me at 229-0984 if you have any leads. Although my lease expires
April 30, I'm sure the actual date I would leave could be flexible, as long
as it is after that date.
- Michael

Subject: childhood hunger in Vermont

Thanks so much to all of you who attended our evening potluck with Robert Dostis, Dorigan Keeney and Georgia Myer to see Robert's film on childhood hunger in Vermont and discuss how we all can help: politically, by keeping pressure on our representatives to vote for food stamps, WIC and other important food  programs that keep being cut; physically with our own hands, by helping at the Calais-Woodbury Food Shelf; and monetarily by making donations of food or funds. I hope you found the evening as informative as I did. We clearly have great people working to end childhood hunger, and I am hopeful we can make a difference.

I know some of you expressed an interest in presenting these topics as part of the Nutrition Committee at the Calais Elementary School and at your local churches. If you need more information, materials or films, or want to make a contribution of time, donations, or both, please contact the following people:

Subject: Open Sugarhouse Postponed 1 Week

Hello All,

I've decided to postpone my open sugarhouse gathering one week, to
Sunday, April 6, as in spite of a small sap run yesterday and today,
things remain largely frozen up, and colder weather is forecast for the
next few days.  I have managed to boil only twice so far, once on the
15th, and last night. There's lots of ice in my holding tanks, and
without a day or two of temperatures in the upper 40's or even low 50's,
things aren't going to really thaw out enough to have things running
smoothly for the weekend.  It may warm up enough to get another small
run--some taps are dripping pretty well today, with temps in the low
40's--but I'm afraid there might not be enough for a good boil this
Sunday.  I may be boiling a little, but am not expecting a large run.
If you want to come out this weekend anyway, please call first, to find
out what I might be doing when.

Thank you! so much to those of you who have ordered their syrup
early--that's always a great help!  Orders continue to arrive in the
mail, and it's not too late to send yours!  If you would like pricing or
mailing information, please call or email me.  I have a list in my
sugaring journal, and will get your syrup to you just as soon as I make
it...

So, please plan to come to the open sugarhouse on Sunday, April 6, from
1-5 p.m.  Good company, cider donuts, pickles, other snacks and of
course tastes of hot, fresh maple syrup await you. Please call if you
have any questions, we look forward to seeing you here in Calais!
(287 Old West Church Rd., just up from Kents' Corner, 229-5621.)

best,
Craig Line, a.k.a. mr. surple

Subject: Amphibian Rescue!

Amphibian Rescue!

During the first warm, rainy nights of spring, over half a dozen different species of frogs and salamanders make a mass migration from their wintering sites in upland habitats to vernal pools and other suitable breeding grounds.  Due to habitat fragmentation by roads, a vast number of frogs and salamanders are inadvertently killed each year trying to cross through the traffic.  Road mortality is painfully high, destroying entire populations or limiting their success rate.  Add to this increased development and higher road usage, and the scales are tipped squarely against these animals.  The objectives of this program are to educate the public about this little-known mass migration, and to recruit volunteers to assist our four-legged friends in their dangerous journey.

Training to take place on April 10, 6:30 PM at the Maple Corner Community Center.

Learn how to save these precious creatures during their annual spring migration.

Training Session Agenda

  1. Intro to North Branch Nature Center’s Amphibian Monitoring Program.
  2. Overview of what species are likely to be encountered, and where to search.
  3. Protocol for amphibian monitoring/rescue.
  4. Q&A and volunteer sign up.

The Sixth Annual Adamant Blackfly Festival Parade
"Downtown" Adamant
Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Please mark your calendars and start mixing up the paper mache: the date for the sixth annual Adamant Blackfly Festival has been set for Saturday, May 17th.

As always, the highlight of the festival is the Blackfly Parade. The parade features eclectic costumes and impromptu music, including what promises to be an impressive demonstration of virtuoso kazoo playing and creative percussionist riffs on trash can lids.

People of all ages are welcome to join the parade, which is especially popular with children and adults with an off-beat sense of humor. Past parades have variously been described as "campy", "Felliniesque", and "the Macy’s Day Parade of the Insect World."

Please help us in making this year’s parade the social (if not the artistic) event of the season by joining us in the parade on Saturday, May 17.

For more information about the Adamant Blackfly Festival Parade, please contact Cindy Cook (802-223-6060, ccook@adamantaccord.com) or
